Stars and Stripes on Main

On seven occasions throughout the year, Rotarians head out to Main Street in downtown Hendersonville and reverently place 3-feet-tall American flags in the planter boxes along six city blocks.

The American flag is a unifying, nationally-recognized symbol so the Club chose this as its newest community project in the hopes the all-day display of more than 300 flags will foster unity, hope and patriotism among individuals from all walks of life.

The dates of placement are: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Patriot’s Day, Election Day and Veterans Day.

HENDERSONVILLE – Main Street will be lined with American flags on Sept. 11 for the third year running, part of a Rotary Club project to display a “symbol of patriotism” on major holidays and days of remembrance.

The project, called Stars and Stripes on Main, began two years ago, proposed by former New York Judge Fritz Becker.

Becker and a team of volunteers meet at 7 a.m. on a number of national holidays to put up 300 3-foot-tall flags in the planted beds along Main Street, the release said.

“(It’s) a way for the community to commemorate dates that are significant to our democracy,” John Connet, Hendersonville city manager and president of the local Rotary Club, said in the release.
